Headlands and windbreaks:
- Diversity of composition and structure should be the aim, using or encouraging native species where possible.
- Species which are host plants of important fruit pest and pathogens, particularly sharka and ESFY, must be avoided.
- Avoid blackthorn and other Prunus spp. (hosts of Cacopsylla pruni which is the vector for ESFY) near plum and apricot orchards.
- Hedgerows should provide adequate screening to prevent pollution and contamination of fruit by exhaust fumes from busy roads.
