Neither strawberry nor cane fruit should be grown on sites infested with perennial weeds. 

If available, preliminary tests for soil-borne pathogens should be done.

Sites contaminated with the soil-borne root rot pathogen Verticillium dahliae should be avoided for strawberry production.

For blueberries and Rubus species, sites close to the forest should be excluded from production (or distance should be maximised) to avoid infection by Armillaria spp. and Thielaviopsis basicola.
