Célia Mateus is an entomologist, senior researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV), in Portugal, since 2005. Research work has been focused on the Integrated Pest Management in different agricultural ecosystems, including protected crops, working mainly with Thysanoptera and Auchenorrhyncha. Previously has also studied pests of agricultural stored products. She has participated in national and international research projects and published several indexed and technical papers. Because INIAV is the National Reference Laboratory for plant protection issues, besides research, is also responsible for official monitoring plans for several quarantine insect pests. Has also been involved in the training of university students and technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture.

In 1991, as a master´s student she attended for the first time a IOBC-WPRS meeting (the Working Group ‘Integrated Control in Protected Crops, Mediterranean Climate” Meeting, at Alassio, Italy). She participated in the organization of the meetings of this WG that took place in Portugal: in Lisbon (1994) and in Oeiras (2018) and was elected deputy convenor of the WG in 2025. Also has participated in meetings of other working groups, namely the WG “Integrated Protection in Stored Products” (including in the organization of the 2001, Lisbon’s meeting); WG “Integrated Control in Citrus Fruit Crops”; WG “Integrated Protection of Olive Crops”; and WG “Integrated Protection of Fruit Crops, Subgroup Soft Fruits”.
