Cesare GESSLER

Cesare Gessler graduated in 1974 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH in Zürich in Agronomy and obtained the PhD 1977 in plant pathology. After a young scientist leave with Professor J. Kuc in Kentucky working on induced resistance, he returned to ETH. 1980. Since his research activity mainly deals with the downy mildew of grape and apple scab.
From 2003 to 2007 he led the project Safecrop in Trentino Italy. 2006 he was nominated Honorary Professor of the ETH-Zürich. In 2009 he received the award “Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society”. Currently his team is creating cisgenic apples with resistance to apple scab and fireblight through incorporation of Malus resistance genes. Gessler has a large international collaboration (INRA Angers, JKI Dresden, Uni Bologna, PRI-URL Wageningen, FEM-IASMA Italy). The scientific output is represented by over 180 papers in ISI journals and over 30 PhD. Currently he is teaching Plant pathology epidemiology and Diagnostics.

From 1997 to 2005 he was the treasurer of IOBC-wprs.
