Sylvia Blümel was Head of the Department for Plant Health in fruit crops, viticulture & special crops at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety in Vienna, Austria (AGES; http://www.ages.at) until the end of 2023. Her key qualifications are IPM in protected crops, fruit crops and viticulture and side-effect testing of pesticides and phytosanitary pests.
She was involved in several EU research projects (“CAPER EU-CA-FAIR5-CT97-3510”; “FATEALLCHEM QLRT-2000-01967”, EUPHRESCO 1&2- ERA-NET projects, FP7-Q-Collect, FP7-ERA-NET C-IPM, H2020 ERA-NET SusCrop, H2020 Project FF-IPM) and was chair of the Network Management Group of Euphresco-NETWORK (https://www.euphresco.net). She was also active in plant health and plant protection related EFSA and EPPO Gremia. She has evaluated several EU research projects as independent expert. Since 1994/95 she is university lecturer at the University of Life Sciences and Natural Resources (BOKU), Vienna, at the Institute of Plant Protection for “Integrated and biological pest control in horticultural crops”. Besides she was member of the Governing Council of the International centre of Insect Physiology and Insect Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi, Kenia from 2002 to 2007.

She has joined IOBC-WPRS in 1986 and from 1997 to 2005 was Council Member and Liaison Officer for the WG “Integrated Control in Protected Crops”. From 2005 to 2010 she was one of the Vice Presidents and Liaison Officer for the WGs “Integrated Protection in Viticulture” and “Integrated Management of Plant Feeding Mites”. From 2010 until 2017 she was Treasurer of IOBC-WPRS and Liaison Officer for the WGs “Integrated Protection in Viticulture” and the Commission “Guidelines for Integrated Production”. From 2018-2021 she was Vice President and Liaison Officer for the “Commission on Harmonisation of Invertebrate Biological Control Agents (CHIBCA)”. Since 2021 she is Council Member and Liaison Officer for CHIBCA and the WG “Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms”.
