Adapting IPM to changing pest complexes in Canadian greenhouse ornamentals

Abstract: Canada’s greenhouse ornamental sector has widely adopted biological control, yet
evolving pest complexes now challenge established integrated pest management (IPM)
programs. This presentation examines how biologically based IPM is being adapted to address invasive thrips and persistent aphid outbreaks while dealing with pesticide resistance and the need to reduce reliance on conventional chemistries. It highlights clean-start strategies for propagative material, expanded use of predators, parasitoids, and biopesticides, cultivar-based resistance, and stronger extension support for implementation. Together, these approaches illustrate a shift toward adaptive, evidence-based IPM systems designed for commercial greenhouse ornamentals under increasingly complex production conditions.
