Generalist predators – role on conservation biological control in the Oeste region, Portugal

Abstract: In Mediterranean greenhouses, which are open, unheated, polyethylene plastic
structures, the same species of parasitoids and predators are largely found both inside and
outside. Thus, plant-based ecological infrastructures can act as a repository/insectary for
beneficial arthropods (and sometimes pests). These infrastructures are essential for ensuring the population level of beneficial arthropods that promotes effective pest control, particularly for those species not commercially available. Among them, arthropods like Dicyphus cerastii and Coenosia attenuata have been the subject of study in recent years, particularly in the Portuguese Oeste region. We present the key findings of studies aimed at elucidating their biology and discuss their potential as conservation biological control agents in protected crops in this region.
