Open Science: opportunities and challenges

 5.00

Abstract: The open science movement is currently receiving a great deal of attention because
of its potential to make research more efficient, reproducible, equitable, and trustworthy while also increasing public access to scientific information. This paper provides an overview of the major goals and initiatives associated with the open science movement as well as some of the significant challenges that need to be addressed. Building on this discussion, it draws two lessons for agricultural researchers to keep in mind. First, it is important to consider the
informational needs of a wide variety of stakeholders, including non-specialist members of the public. Second, it is important to consider both the strengths and weaknesses of particular open science tools and standards, such as the FAIR Principles for data management, so these resources can be applied in a thoughtful manner.
