The cultivar/rootstock chosen must offer good prospects for economic success with minimal use of agrochemicals. For example, Golden Delicious must not be planted on sites prone to russeting, nor Jonagold on sites unfavourable for fruit colouring and firmness.

IP guidelines must provide a list of the relative susceptibilities of the commonly grown cultivars/rootstock of pome fruits to all important pests and diseases.
