Diseases
Biological control of Sclerotinia by Coniothyrium minitans.
Weeds
Mechanical control to be preferred.
Ensure appropriate control of Ambrosia and Datura.
Monitoring and long term management of toxic weeds is recommended.
Wherever a control measure is deemed necessary, a biological or biotechnical control method must be used if available and effective.
Animal pests
Insecticides are permitted only in case of severe infestations by aphids and weevils or other arthropod pests.
Avoid all insecticide applications during flowering.
Diseases
Fungicides are only permitted for seed dressing or/and heavy Sclerotina or Botrytis infections.
Weeds
A combination of mechanical and chemical weed control must be used.
The prevention and/or suppression of key pests and diseases must be supported among other options especially by:
Sunflower need irrigation only in critical dry conditions.
N-Fertilisation before planting max. 50 kg/ha.
Reduced intensity of soil cultivation is recommended, particularly in areas prone to erosion.
At least 75 cm row distance is preferred to facilitate mechanical weed control.
Avoid late cultivars on heavy soils to protect soil structure.
Cultivars tolerant to Sclerotinia, Diaporthe and Macrophomina are preferred.
Cultivars resistant to Plasmopara halstediipathotypes present in the region are required.
