Abstract: A study on the feasibility and the choice of criteria for developing a general outline fora case-specific monitoring regime for transgenic potato has been performed. Possible impacts ofgenetic modifications on non-target organisms are assessed, considering the direct or indirecteffects of metabolic alterations of the GM plants. Criteria for an appropriate risk assessment andrecommendations for case-specific monitoring are suggested based on a review of the scientificliterature on crop-organism interactions. First, we identify relevant pathways of plant-organisminteractions through nutrients, toxins, or mechanisms of attraction and defence. Second, weconsider the need for case-specific monitoring, taking into account variability of existing potatovarieties and environmental conditions.
