Improving the storage life of carrots by using natural products


Abstract: There is a growing demand for foods grown without harmful chemical
pesticides and using environmentally friendly ways for their protection. Natural products
derived from plants are a promising tool that could help to protect vegetables from various
diseases and possibly extend their storage life. In this research, it was investigated how
sprays with thyme essential oil (TEO) on carrot plants affect their storage life. Results
revealed that TEO sprayings did not significantly affect carrots’ storage life and resistance.
Furthermore, the higher weight means were obtained from carrot roots treated with TEO
in all evaluations compared with the controls. This study indicates the promising effect of
TEO sprayings on carrot plants in minimizing weight changes of healthy carrot roots
during storage.
